OSU’s Jared Davidson earns national honor
STILLWATER, Okla. – The name Jared Davidson is well-recognized on the Stillwater campus of Oklahoma State University. After his most recent accomplishment, he has become known on a national level in the academia world as well.
The Ft. Cobb native has been named to the second team of USA TODAY’s annual All-USA College Academic Team competition. The competition honors those who stand above the rest, not only in the classroom, but also in terms of public service.
“There is a saying that goes, talent can hit a target others cannot; genius can hit a target others can’t see,” said Bailey Norwood, Davidson’s adviser and associate professor of agricultural economics with OSU’s Division of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources. “That describes Jared.”
Davidson has earned a large number of academic achievements and awards at OSU. He was recently named the 2008-2009 Paul and Mary Hummer Outstanding Senior in the OSU College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources (CASNR), and was also recognized as a Dean Fred LeCrone Senior, which signifies the top five graduating seniors of the college.
“I could come here with this long list of awards (Jared has earned), but the mere fact that he is here today receiving this award signifies a tremendous amount of other awards he already received,” Norwood said at the reception on May 1.
Davidson’s work outside the classroom is just as noteworthy. As a past Oklahoma 4-H president, he spent much of his freshman year traveling and experiencing many issues faced by rural communities. Throughout his time at OSU, Davidson worked with numerous professors and state agencies to develop action plans for meeting rural health and infrastructure needs.
In addition, Davidson was named a recipient of the Henry Clay Center for Statesmanship Scholarship and was selected as a national Harry S. Truman Scholarship finalist.
Davidson gave much praise to Robert Graalman, director of OSU’s Office of Scholar Development and Student Recognition, as well as CASNR administration and professors.
“There is no doubt in my mind that we can compete with any institution in the United States or the world, here at Oklahoma State,” Davidson said. “This is just the beginning of many, many great things to come.”
He graduated on May 9 with a major in agricultural economics and a minor in political science. He plans to work in the rural development and policy fields and attend law school with a special emphasis on public interest work.
Davidson was honored with a plaque that will permanently hang on the walls of the OSU Student Union in Stillwater.
