Understanding the Different Perspectives of the Research Administration Puzzle
- Dave Richardson, Penn State/NCURA
What is my role and how do I fit in? How does my piece of the puzzle relate to the overall picture? Mr. Richardson will answer these questions and more. He will focus on the supply chain of research management and the importance of all the roles involved. Often, folks are so busy pushing the paper that the larger picture becomes obscured. Utilizing a recent Faculty Burden survey and real-life examples, Dave will discuss how administrators at all levels improve the operational support of the institutional sponsored portfolio. There are numerous cases where faculty and administrators (and projects) have been "saved" by competent departmental and laboratory level sponsored administrators. The key is developing a system whereby they feel they are an integral part of the supply chain.

Academic Alliance: The FBI’s Role on Campus – Jeremy Rebmann, FBI
No one likes to hear, “I’m with the government, and I’m here to help,” but sometimes it’s true! Through the Academic Alliance and Business Alliance programs, the FBI has dedicated special agents and analysts to universities and cutting-edge businesses. Through these partnerships, the U.S. has been better able to prevent unwanted technology transfer, patent infringement and economic espionage. U.S. businesses, universities and the FBI all have a common goal: to enjoy the freedom to work without interference or manipulation from those who don’t have our best interests in mind. In this role, the FBI comes alongside universities with a common goal, rather than blocking the way with regulatory restrictions.

Piecing Together a Budget: The Basics of Construction – Fran Stephens, OU

Common pieces (budget line items) that are included in construction of a budget such as labor, travel, equipment, materials, other direct costs, and indirect costs will be reviewed. Issues such as cost share, personnel effort, subcontracts, international collaboration, and limited indirect costs will be touched on from both a budget construction and application standpoint. Time permitting, some examples of solicitation requirements will be provided and discussed to ascertain budget impact.
