NEWS MEDIA INTERVIEW TIPS
Preparation: The Key to a Good Interview
1. Ask about subject of interview, time needed, deadline.
2. Write out three brief, positive points.
3. Anticipate likely questions, plan answers. If possible, rehearse.
4. Background literature usually welcomed.
5. For a surprise interview, take a few minutes to plan message.
6. For a surprise phone call interview, call right back . . .after planning message.
The Interview
1. Answer questions . . . and bridge to positive points.
2. Be confident, you're the expert.
3. Avoid speculation, hypotheticals.
4. Avoid technical terms, jargon, and acronyms.
5. Don't say, “No comment.” If you can't answer, explain why.
6. Don't be afraid to say, “I don't know . . . but I'll find out for you.
7. Keep answers to 20 seconds or so; keep eyes on interviewer;
don't fill dead air.
8. Be honest and assert yourself!
