Club members will shine at 93rd State 4-H Roundup

STILLWATER, Okla. – For 93 years, State 4-H Roundup has provided club members with an opportunity to learn, make new friends and enhance their life skills. This year will be no different.

It may not be a Hollywood event, but many stars will be shining as hundreds of 4-H’ers from across the state gather July 23-25 for the 93rd State 4-H Roundup. This year’s theme is “4-H: Making Superstars.”

There probably are a few “superstar” names you are familiar with, including Reba McIntire, David Letterman, Jimmy Carter and Temple Grandin. What do they have in common? They are former 4-H’ers.

“No matter what your passion is, 4-H will equip you with the life skills needed to succeed in life like it has for so many others,” said Ricki Schroeder, president of the Oklahoma 4-H leadership team. “To me, a superstar is someone who’s talented, successful and confident in whatever they choose to do, and there is no one that fits that description better than a 4-H’er.”

Tracy Beck, events and activities coordinator at the State 4-H Office, said 4-H offers members many different ways in which to shine like stars.

“Anyone can be a star in 4-H and we provide many ways to shine through project work,” Beck said. “We hope the workshops and various activities we have planned for Roundup will bring out the qualities all of our club members need to make them shine at home, as well as strengthen and enhance the many qualities they already possess.”

Included on this year’s agenda will be a number of favorite activities, including the FCS Skill-a-Thon, Fabrics and Fashion Revue, communications contests, Job Readiness, Livestock Quiz Bowl, 4-H Food Showdown and Tractor Operators Contest.

A select group of club members will have a chance to shine as they participate in the 4-H Has Talent competition.

“These contests and activities provide our club members with a chance to further develop their life skills, which is what 4-H is all about,” she said.

In keeping with tradition, State 4-H Roundup also will offer a variety of educational workshops geared toward project work.

Workshop topics include healthy eating and snacking, ATV safety, crops judging, careers in family and consumer sciences, sewing, electronics, entomology, leadership development, eco-friendly clothing, team building, wildlife management, technology, driving safety and digital media, to name a few.

State 4-H Roundup is steeped in a rich tradition of recognizing the achievements of club members from around the state. One of the biggest recognitions is the announcement of the two inductees into the State 4-H Hall of Fame during the annual Honor Night Assembly. Being inducted into the State 4-H Hall of Fame is the highest honor a 4-H’er can achieve at the state level.

In addition, more than $100,000 worth of scholarships will be presented during the Honor Night Assembly to deserving club members who completed project record books or scholarship applications and were selected state winners.

Roundup also serves as a venue in which to introduce the new state leadership team, district officers, Key Club members, National Congress delegates and State 4-H Ambassadors.

“This year’s Roundup will be as exciting as ever and we’re all looking forward to seeing everyone shine,” Beck said.
