Stillwater Flower Show at OSU on June 17

STILLWATER – Flower gardening enthusiasts will have the opportunity to show off their green thumbs June 17 by participating in the Oklahoma State University Agronomy Club’s first annual Stillwater Flower Show.

The open-to-the-public show will take place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the OSU Botanic Garden, located at 3300 W. 6th Ave. just west of the OSU Agronomy Research Station. Local food trucks will be on hand for those wishing to purchase meals and refreshments.

“There is no charge for people wishing to attend the show, and only a minimal cost for those wishing to compete,” said Beatrix Haggard, OSU Agronomy Club adviser and a faculty member with the department of plant and soil sciences.

Youth can enter a plant or flower arrangement in the competition for $5, while adults can do so for $10 per entry. All entries are due no later than 10:30 a.m. the day of the show. Judging will commence at 11 a.m. The Grand Prize is a $100 gift certificate to Bustani Plant Farm in Stillwater.

Casey Hentges, host of the OSU Division of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources’ popular and award-winning “Oklahoma Gardening” television show broadcast on OETA, will judge the competition entries.

Categories include live potted, cut rose and other cut flowers. Cut flowers also will be made available to allow the public to practice making an arrangement, which they then can take home.

“Growing plants, whether it is a field of a corn or a potted ivy, has a lasting impact on our lives; children will start to pay more attention to their surroundings outside if they relate to the plants and animals they see,” Haggard said. “This flower show is not only a great time to experience beautiful flowers, youth and adults alike can expand their knowledge in a fun way if just by learning the names of flowers and something about them.”

“We hope people will come out and be a part of our community of growers and gardening enthusiasts, learning from and interacting with each other, OSU Agronomy Club students and faculty of the department of plant and soil sciences,” Haggard said.

The OSU Agronomy Club was founded in 1934, with the mission is to promote fellowship, leadership and educational opportunities among agronomists. Though the club is focused within the department of plant and soil sciences, it counts amongst its members students throughout the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources.
